I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy an apple pencil and what can I say apart from why on earth did I not get one sooner! It is an outstanding piece of equipment which has allowed me to digitally illustrate easier, with a hand drawn feel and with no paper waste! At first I was a bit hesitant to buy one as I had a 53 stylus previously used it for about a month then the novelty wore off and I didn't use it much after that. I then impulsively signed up for a contract Ipad pro a couple of years ago when my phone company rang me and bigged it up and made it sound like an amazing deal so my ADHD brain was like "I NEED IT"!! (I already had an ipad mini at the time) so again I used it for a while... the novelty wore off and then it was redundant up until I bought my apple pencil, and now both of them come everywhere with me! The apple pencil... It does what it says on the tin its just like writing with a normal pencil but on a screen. At first it takes a while to get used to as obviously paper is not shiny so it doesn't feel like writing on paper. But due to the hard tip it is much easier than my previous stylus to add details and make my illustrations more accurate. It also enables me to reduce the ammount of notebooks I impulsively buy and dont use as I bought the app "goodnotes" which in app that allows you to create note books and write on them as you would in a paper notebook with the option to print the notebooks out if necessary. This is ideal for me because as I like to have one sketchbook for each project I often end up buying a sketchbook using a quarter of it and then not using it again and buying a new one for the next project. This obviously causes a lot of clutter and paper waste. But thanks too goodnotes and procreate I now create all my sketchbook work on my ipad, make it into a PDF and hand it in either online or print it and hand it in physically in a plastic document wallet. Another good thing about goodnotes and the apple pencil is that particularly for graphic designers it allows them to drop images and analyse things without having to print, stick in and then analyse it like you would if you were using a paper sketchbook. Procreate It is fair to say that this app has been an absolute god send for me! Mainly because due to my issues with perfectionism I am often having to rub things out or bin work and starting again, which again wastes time, paper and makes me frustrated and I will usually just give up with it. But pro create I can simply just click undo and continue to work on it, as well as also having the option to duplicate work so I can try different ideas and develop things further without having to worry that "I only have the one chance" or "this is my only copy". There are a wide variety of brushes available already in pro create but you can also find a lot online too some for free and some you have to pay for. Thanks to pro create I have found my love for digital lettering and im hoping this is something I will continue to develop over the coming years as its been around a month or so since buying my pencil and procreate and the NOVELTY HAS NOT WORN OFF!! WOOO!! Final thing, thee tools and apps I feel are CRUCIAL for those arty ADHDers out there as it allows you to have everything in one place, reduces clutter, minimises frustration when something goes wrong and also allows you to make the most of your ipad. Try and stick to one system! get rid of paper and go digital! Make the most off the apple apps like calendar too then everything really will be in one place and make everything so much easier. BUT MAKE SURE YOU DONT FORGET TO CHARGE IT! All of these apps and the pencil are making my life much easier both within my design work and personal life!! Here is some of the first things I have created using pro create and my apple pencil!

PHONE CALL AT 8:45AM?!?!?! Its 8:45am on a Friday morning, I’m ill, late for my lecture, oh whats that my phones ringing? It’s the CEO of the ADHD foundation… In my head Im thinking why is he ringing me at this godly hour? He must be ringing by mistake right? Wrong… “kristen… I’m just wondering if you could help me with something?” “Yeah sure go on…” (at this point its almost 8:50am and I’m walking round my room with just my arms in my jumper trying to hold the phone) “ we are wanting to make some changes to our logo strap-line and add an umbrella into it somewhere, is this something you could do for us and how long would a job like this take you?” “well when do you need it by? A certain date or just ASAP?” “in about a week… maybe two?” “yeah that’s fine mo problem” (someone send help please)
On a serious note, I am thrilled to be given yet another amazing opportunity to produce work for the foundation and I an super excited to see what comes from this project! What? Where? How?We recently began looking into the degree show and the areas that we needed to discuss and things we needed to do in order for the show to be a success. I think it's pretty obvious that in order for the show to be successful we need to work as a team or teams.
So there are three areas that need a team each, these are: Design team: Responsible for the designs of invitations and relevant materials for the show. Fundraising team: Responsible for the raising of funds for any promotional materials, refreshments and printed materials such as brochures. Marketing team: Responsible for promoting the show in a variety of ways, particularly social media. The three are to communicate with each other in order for this to work. We were then asked to split ourselves into one of the three areas where we would like to be involved. I chose the design group. During my time in the design group were split off into smaller groups and asked to come up with a name and identity for the show. Unfortunately over the weeks we were doing with my group became just me so I ended up tagging along with another group. We began by researching past degree shows and looking at their materials for inspiration and to see what works and what doesn't and of course how we can make ours better. Once we had done our research, in our individual groups we had to come up with a name and present our ideas to the others. There was then a voting page where people were able to vote for the best name/idea. Unfortunately my "group" if you can call it that, didn't win. But I was finding it quite difficult to get involved with some of the people in the group as they showed very little enthusiasm for the task which then had a knock on effect and I didn't really engage with it probably due to this. There were some really good ideas produced by those involved in the design team and I look forward to seeing the other groups work when its completed! Branding-LogoI was asked by my sports massage therapist to brand her business for her, which I was more than happy to do! So I met up with her to discuss it and because it was new and exciting my little ADHD brain got slightly hyperfocused and went and literally smashed tons of work out in such a short period of time.
After sending the logos to Amber she wasn't sure it was exactly what she wanted so id gone from A-Z really quickly at the beggining after meeting with her and then from Z-A just as quick when she wasnt sure and then that was it the hyperfocus was gone. Hopefully I will be able to get my groove back and try to tackle it again! Here is what I created during the wild hyperfocus stage... Freelance.Today I volunteered at the foundation and as they like to keep me busy they are always making sure I have something to do, therefore, some of the time they give me documents and ask me to re-design and in their words "make it look pretty". So here is a Tourettes syndrome fact sheet I re-designed for them.
Creative Design Practice. As part of my Creative design practice module I need to make a posterzine. As my project is based around ADHD and after meeting and listening to Rory Bremner at the ADHDF conference I decided to experiment with some ideas which incorporated images of him and things he said. As I was struggling at the time I decided to tweet one of these and Rory replied to me saying:
"Keep going! remember not to beat yourself up. ADHD makes you who you are, but you can make it work for you!" Here is my branded stationary set which includes: -Business card -Invoice Template -compliment slip Admitting I have ADHD on social media.
“Over the last two days I have had the absolute pleasure of working with the amazing ADHD Foundation at their national conference event as well as attending their winter ball and awards evening, where I was awarded with volunteer of the year which is so so amazing and I am very humbled to have been chosen for this. I have had the opportunity to listen to speakers from across the world and broaden my knowledge on ADHD,neurodiversity and mental health even more which is something I am so very grateful for. Being given the opportunity to help out at such an amazing event based on something that impacts my everyday life is so amazing and it was touching to be in a room with over 700 people who are trying to understand ADHD, with a number of them with the condition themselves. I was able to work alongside some of the best people I have ever met (and meet Rory Bremner). I want to thank everyone from the foundation for a number of things; putting up with me, supporting me, giving me this amazing opportunity (amongst others), selecting me as volunteer of the year, for an AMAZING ball, for all the work you do raising awareness for ADHD and for just all being fantastic people. I will always appreciate everything you have done for me and thank you again for letting me be involved in your amazing charity!
And on that note I have finally decided that for the first time Im going to do something that I havent done before and that is plucking up the courage and announcing via social media that, I HAVE ADHD. Yes I am female and no its not just for boys. It is REAL and it is HARD but it imparts so many positives too. Im not going to pretend to be someone I’m not just to suit societies idea of “normal”. I have ADHD and im not ashamed of it. Thank you to everyone who has supported me with my difficulties and helped me to get where I am today. I will always be grateful💙 Able Dynamic High functioning Different -Rory Bremner 🧠🌟💙💙💙💙" |
